Michael Maule (born 31 October 1921) is an American ballet dancer and instructor, now retired. ==Early life and training== Born in Durban, South Africa,〔Horst Koegler, ''The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Ballet'', 2d ed. (Oxford University Press, 1982).〕 Michael Maule was a descendant of Scottish immigrants who had settled in the province of Natal, on the Indian Ocean.〔Patrick Hanks, ''The Oxford Dictionary of American Family Names'' (Oxford University Press, 2003).〕 His early training in ballet took place in Pietermaritzburg and Durban, first under Nancy Hooper-Graham and then, from age fourteen, under Eileen Keegan and Dorothea McNair,〔Marina Grut, ''The History of Ballet in South Africa'' (Cape Town: Human & Rousseau, 1981), p. 191.〕 all teachers of the Cecchetti method.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Cecchetti Pioneers: Nancy Hooper-Graham )〕 He left South Africa and moved to London in the late 1930s, when he was still a teenager. Upon the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Royal Navy and served on sea duty for five years.
